چکیده

We report new measurements of the linear polarization of thermal radiation emitted by incandescent thin tungsten wires, with thicknesses ranging from five to hundred microns. Our data show very good agreement with theoretical predictions, based on Drude-type fits to measured optical properties of tungsten. Polarized thermal emission by thin metal wires 2

Temperature Dependent Polarization of Thermal Radiation Emitted by hot Tungsten Wires

The properties of thermal emission of hot bodies is a central topic in Modern Physics [1]. The dependence of the Planck’s law only on the body temperature T but not on its material properties make pirometry a universal pyrometric technique [2]. The blackbody emission consists of unpolarized, incoherent radiation for bodies whose size is larger than the typical thermal wavelength, λT = hc/kBT, w...

Influence of Temperature Gradients on Tunnel Junction Thermometry below 1 K : Cooling and Electron - Phonon Coupling

We have studied thermal gradients in thin Cu and AlMn wires, both experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, the wires were Joule heated non-uniformly at sub-Kelvin temperatures, and the resulting temperature gradients were measured using normal metal-insulator-superconducting tunnel junctions. The data clearly shows that even in reasonably well conducting thin wires with a short (∼ ...

Measurement of Thin Film Isotropic and Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity Using 3ω and Thermoreflectance Imaging

The 3ω method is a well established technique for experimentally extracting thermal conductivity of thin films and substrates. The 3ω method calculates thermal conductivity by measuring thin film temperature response to a metal strip heater deposited on the material’s surface. The electrical resistance of the metal strip is used as both heat source and temperature sensor. An important factor in...

Size Effects on the Thermal Conductivity of Thin Metallic Wires: Microscale Implications

This study examines the influence of radial thickness on the thermal conductivity of thin metallic wires. While size effects on the electrical conductivity of thin wires have been discussed in the literature, research into size effects on thermal conductivity still requires investigation. At such small length scales, the assumption that the reduced electrical conductivity can be simply related ...

Transient thermal characterization of micro/submicroscale polyacrylonitrile wires

In this work, the thermal diffusivity of single polyacrylonitrile (PAN) wires with diameters from 4.62 μm down to 324 nm is measured by using our recently developed transient electro-thermal technique. The wires span from 23 μm to 126.2 μm in our measurement. Since PAN wires are dielectric, a thin Au film is coated on the surface of the wires to make them conductive. In the experiment, a step c...
